Calling all Bahá’ís ages 18 and over in northeastern South Carolina!
Welcome to Unit Convention 2024 at the Louis G. Gregory Bahá’í Institute, 1209 Williams Hill Road, Hemingway, SC on Saturday, October 5, 10 am to 2 pm. Registration begins at 9:30 am; lunch will be provided. Classes for children and junior youth will be held during the Convention.
What is a unit convention?
Every year, Bahá’ís across the United States gather in their local area on the first weekend of October to elect delegates who will attend the Bahá’í National Convention the following spring and to consult about efforts in their unit to further release “the society-building power of the teachings of Bahá’u’lláh.”
One of the duties of the 171 delegates elected from across the country is to vote by secret ballot for the nine Bahá’ís who will serve on the National Spiritual Assembly for the following year. This institution is the national governing body for the Bahá’ís of the United States.
How do Bahá’ís vote? All registered Baha’is 18 and over in northeastern South Carolina should have received a bright yellow postcard with details about voting, which can be done online or paper ballot at the Convention; if friends are unable to attend, votes can be submitted online, by mail, email, text or phone. See yellow postcard and the letter from the Baha’i National Center with a ballot and instructions.
Unique features of Baha’i elections include:
Choosing those who exemplify spiritual qualities and service
Seeking a diversity of perspectives, cultures and experiences
No nominations or candidates are allowed
There is no campaigning or electioneering
There is no discussion among the participants about who to vote for
Votes are private
Voting is preceded by prayers and is conducted in a prayerful atmosphere
